Our saucy little orange wench has a heritage to challenge that of Collette. Long ago, while roaming with the Greeks and Trojans in the Greek Isles, she was called Pepon. Later during her sojourn in Europe, the French changed her name to Pompon. Meanwhile across the channel Mr. Shakespeare immortalized her as Pumpion in the Merry Wives of Windsor. After catching a ship to the new world, she at last claimed a suitable name when the American colonists changed her moniker to a pronounceable Pumpkin, as in Cinderella, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater. Here in her new home her enticing looks were not appreciated for their orange flush. Still, she was looked upon as a deliciously meaty veggie. She was desired for her body as folks sliced off her top, removed the seeds, filled her insides with milk, spices and honey, and set her to cook in the fire’s ashes. Bored with casting about in her culinary role, she became more punk and underwent a career and name change to Punkin. Rock icon Smashing Pumpkins wanted her, but instead she hooked up with a character called Stingy Jack, a bad boy from across the pond; a story in itself. According to legend, Stingy Jack invited the devil to have a drink with him. The devil did not want to pay for the libation, so Jack talked him into turning himself into a coin with which he was to pay Jack for the drink.
